Monterey to San Francisco

24 Jul 2022

Before leaving Monterey we look a walk from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Canneries, lovely recreational trail and spotted a few harbour seals and sea otters on the way. Took a drive to Carmel, a rich man’s paradise and Clint Eastwood used to be a mayor!

Headed to the final destination of our road trip of 36 days and 4,276 miles since we set off from Tacoma in Seattle.

Before dropping off the car we took a drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, mostly covered in low flying fog and headed off to Muir Beach for a look round and lunch stop. Returned over the bridge and still foggy!

Negotiated our way into the city and Nigel made sure we drove down the famous Lombard Street going down hill with 180 degree switchbacks! Dropped off the car then checked into our hotel near Union Square.

First day took a walk round the Presidio, saw the new Tunnel Tops and old military housing at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Second day, had to get lateral flow tests done for our cruise on Sunday. Where we bumped into Sue Charman and friends, who we later had dinner with at the Irish Bar next door to our hotel. Had a look around Yerba Buena Gardens and then spent the afternoon walking to Japantown and back.

Sausilito for the day next on the Golden Gate Ferry, ten years since our last visit. Fabulous day out, resisted spending money on art and jewellery, lots of choice, really good day out, so thanks to Beat for the recommendation some years ago.

Final night in San Francisco before getting back on the Queen Elizabeth tomorrow. That’s if we can negotiate the pier area as the marathon is taking place tomorrow!! Timing!

SF was one of my favourite cities, but it has not stood the test of time and might be our final visit.
