Bucket List for us both and although there was a huge queue, mainly due to another cruise ship in port and summer visitors, we took the plunge to go 2.2km down the streets from Monte. It might be many years before we come back to Maderia so it was now or maybe never.

The ride is in a wicker sleigh, pulled and pushed by two guys in traditional costume, for the reasonable cost of €30.

We set off and soon picked up speed, seems they can go up to 40kmph, depending on which website you read, not sure but felt like nearly that. The sleigh slides from side to side and the photos reflect this!!!

We even overtook another sleigh on the way down. Took about 10 mins but must say really enjoyable and well worth the wait and cost to take part.

A rewarding drink at the end with a view, before the steep walk back into the centre.
