Yes, Nigel did get his Tshirt in Daytona! We took ourselves off to the Ponce De Leon Lighthouse, the tallest in Florida and second tallest in the USA. Beautiful museum with restored original buildings and lots of history of the lighthouse and surrounding area. Daytona is really one very long town, on a beach with the International Speedway Circuit which holds the Daytona 500 each year. Nothing going on at the moment due to Spring Break but lots due to take place.
We left Daytona in the rain (couldn’t believe the weather), heading for Saint Augustine, the oldest town in the USA dating back to 1565. Also coldest town had to retrieve our fleeces from the suitcase! Drove past loads of beach resorts and stopped off at Fort Matanzas, erected to ward off the British!
In Saint Augustine we were going to take the trolley bus tour but at £75 for the two of us, opted for the free walking tour, as the historic old town is very small. Fabulous tour with Adam, a local who gained his degree in Oslo, as its free for Americans, around the old town for about 1.5 hours.
Ruled by the Spanish for about 200 years, the British for about 15 years before becoming part of the USA. Some fabulous buildings built by Mr Flagler, a friend of Rockefeller, to bring the rich and famous to the town. Very touristy but a beautiful town. All school children in Florida come here for a field trip to learn about the history of Florida.
On our way to Tampa we stopped off at the restored Fort King, where three battles took place between the Seminole Tribe and the local Armies. In Tampa now for a visit with our friends Marilyn Brown and Doug until we take our next cruise to Barcelona.
