From here you can visit Athens but we decided to visit the Corinth Canal & Ancient Village. The Canal connects the Ionian and Aegean Seas, it’s only 24m wide and 8m deep and 6km long, so only small ships can transit. We viewed the Canal from the road Bridge and the water is a beautiful azure blue. We then visited the ruins of the ancient town of Corinth, which was built around 44BC and destroyed in 856BC by a earthquake. St Paul preached here and wrote his Letters to the Corinthians. The town itself was a market town and there are lots of building remnants of the market area.
The museum was fabulous, lots of reconstructed artefacts, a stunning mosaic which was found nearly intact and many burial sites which contained offerings along with the skeleton! Also a collection of headless statues, it seems they added the head to order!! Unfortunately in 1990 thieves broke into the museum and stole over 200 artefacts, took 10 years, but they recovered the majority, with the help of the FBI, in Miami.
Finally we had lunch in a local seafront hotel. Really nice buffet with local wine and beautiful surroundings.
