We took a trip out to Sibenik, one of the oldest cities in Croatia, believed to have been founded in the 9th century. It has been ruled over by many including the Hapsburg Monarchy, Venetians, Byzantines, Ottomans and Yugoslavia. The city is famous for the Cathedral of St Jacob, which is the most significant architectural achievement of the 15th and 16th centuries in Croatia. In 2000 it was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. With its domed ceiling, supported only in its structure, carvings on the outer walls of real life looking heads, fabulous carved entrance with the 12 Apostles and the wonderful baptistry in the lower level. The city itself has many narrow winding streets, the columns on the side of buildings were a demonstration of wealth, the higher they were the more money you had. Beautiful harbour with lots of wonderful boats and ferries.
We then took a drive up the hills for a meal in a local restaurant in a rural setting. Lovely soup, lamb & vegetables and small fried donut like balls for dessert. We then headed back to Zadar to visit the Sea Organ, (which is a structure of pipes within a set of steps, which with the waters rise and fall gives out a beautiful sound), a short walk around one of the historic squares and cathedral before heading back to the ship.
