Boracay & Puerto Princesa, Philippines

9 Nov 2024

Boracay, is a popular resort island 200k South of Manila. It is shaped like a bone, 7.5km long and 2km wide at its narrowest point. In 2012 it was named the Best Island in the world. White Beach is it’s most famous at 4km long on the west side of the island.

It was a tender port, waters were really clear and lots of ferry boats to take you to and from Panay Island, greeted by locals dressed in local costumes, dancing away. We took the Hop On Hop Off minibus for a tour of the island for just $6 each, took about 1.5 hours. The ride was an experience in itself, roads left a lot to be desired, huge difference between the small shanty buildings, high rise condos, huge resort hotels, three golf courses and the many small shops along the way. Lots of water sports here including paragliding.

Puerto Princesa
Is the port town on Palawan Island, we had organised a tour here, our guide, Journey and driver Jomar took us around the city and outlying area to see:
– Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
– Plaza Cuartel, under renovation, but where 150 American soldiers were burnt alive by the Japanese on 14 Dec 1944 and now a memorial.
– Binautan Creations – where I had a go at weaving with local raffia!
– Baker’s Hill – a genuine bakery with floral gardens with a love theme. Their speciality is Hopia (moon cake) and Journey had bought us some to taste, a cross between a pastry and cake.
– Mintra’s Ranch – for a view of Honda Bay and surrounding area, you can zip line, go down a long slide, horse ride and generally take part in activities here.
– Butterfly Farm and Tribal Village – small butterfly farm and then through to the tribal village, where they demonstrated local musical instruments, how to create fire, carry food, use blow pipes to kill wildlife and have you picture taken with a python!
– Lastly a walk along the bay area with a view of the local fishing village.
