Another tender port, where we had booked a Sleigh Ride (although on wheels as its summer) at a local farm with Viator.

There were 8 of us on the trip and it took about 20 mins to get to the Omdal Gard Farm, where we met the family Father, Mother, Daughter and Granddaughter. The wheeled sleigh was pulled by two Norwegian Fjord horses, a local breed used in many areas of Europe, due to their abilities in steep mountains, where tractors cannot go.

We took a delightful ride through the neighbouring countryside, including crossing a stream. On our return we were treated to homemade cinnamon rolls, local cured meats and hot drinks in a Lavvu (local Sami tent like home), with a roaring fire.

We learnt all about farm life, the family rear about 200 sheep on their 75 acres, together with breeding the horses, for use on the farm. Willow, one of their mares had given birth to Lark, a week ago, gorgeous! For those sheep who have 3 lambs, the weakest is bottle feed in the farm, as the Mum can’t cope with more than two. Again a lot of gorgeous lambs in the small field.

Also that in the 1800s, a copper mine bought by 2 English men, employed lots of people, from around the world and there were still many descendants. This included our host, who is descendant from a Welsh man and local Sami woman. The mine was closed as it became unprofitable.

We only found out at the end that our bookings had been taken by mistake, as they normally don’t do this tour in the summer, so we were lucky not have it cancelled. The family do the tours in the winter to supplement income from the farm, we had previously been told on another tour, that very few farmers would survive, if they didn’t also have full-time jobs.

It was an excellent tour, a bit different to what we would normally do, but the family were so lovely it was a fabulous day.
