Rufford Old Hall, National Trust

4 May 2026

Not far from home and been several times over the years, including a Murder Mystery Evening, we didn’t guess who done it!

Rufford Old Hall was built for the Hesketh family, Lords of the Manor of Rufford, it dates back to around 1530, although some believe it is earlier.

The oldest part is the Great Hall, which contains the only known surviving example of a 16th century carved wooden screen made of bog oak. Absolutely huge and constructed in situ and remained in the gallery ever since. The roof is stunning and one of the previous lords put a roof-light in it, to illuminate his billiard table! There is even a viewing point from the upstairs rooms overlooking the hall.

The armour collection on display at Rufford is impressive, even a picture with an explanation of the different parts.

There is a rumour that William Shakespeare performed at the Hall, but it hasn’t been confirmed.

One of the volunteers was demonstrating weaving which was interesting. In fact the volunteers here were all very knowledgeable and some were part of the conservation team.

Fabulous gardens, lots in bloom and the topiary squirrels are impressive.

Obviously partook of some coffee and scones before we left, freshly baked. Headed to Heskin Hall Shopping Village, lots of small interesting shops, a couple of cafes and a fruit and veg market.
