Walking tour with our guide Saba to the Old Town, Georgia has had a turbulent past being ruled by different nations including the Mongols, Ottomans, Persians, Russians and a few more besides, until their independence in 1991. However, there have been issues since then, within Georgia itself. If you are interested the BBC has a comprehensive timeline – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17303471
We viewed the Clock Tower near the Eccentric Puppet Theatre, very interesting including a spy hole showing another clock face. Anchiskhati Basilica of St Mary, oldest church in Tblisi dating back to the 6th century. The Patriarchate of Georgia, which served as the official Residence of the Patriarch, Head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, a new one was recently been appointed, due to the passing of the previous Patriarch a few days ago. Tblisi is also known as the City of Balconies.
We then headed to the Peace Bridge built in 2010, contains numerous led lights, to illuminate it in the evening. Rode on the shorter cableway up to the Mother of Georgia Statute and Narikala Fortress (which is under major renovation), fabulous views of the city. Back down on the cableway, thankfully not down all the steps, through Rike Park, over Metehki Bridge, with a statue of Saint George nearby. Saw inside view of an old caravanseri, toastmaster statue and onto the sulphur baths area. Sulphur Baths are very popular, but not for me, some of our group went in the evening, you can hire a private room for one hour, get a scrub and/or massage, but 15 mins max in the water, most only managed a few mins due to how hot it was!
In the afternoon we took a taxi to the Chronicles of Georgia, a monument to the history of Georgia. Impressive and obviously up a lot of steps! Fabulous views of the city and the Sea of Tblisi, which is in fact a reservoir. Our taxi waited for us and the whole 1.5 hour journey cost £15.
After a late lunch at the hotel, we wandered back to the Old Town in the evening for the odd drink (one in a bar owned by a guy from London) and views of the city at night. However, due to late sunset we didn’t get too many good shots, but a very pleasant evening stroll, including watching a girl group filming a video!
