Nynäshamn
From here most people go into Stockholm, we didn’t as it was at least 90 mins to get there and the same back and we have been a few times before. So we decided to walk into the local town, famous as a Spa Town and it’s Marina. Very pleasant little town, not a lot to see but we treated ourselves to a salmon & shrimp sharing platter, along with a few of the local beers, Landsort, the name of a local lighthouse. Bought ourselves some local fruit before heading back to the ship.

Visby
Located on the Swedish island of Gotland, it is one of northern Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. With cobblestone streets, ivy & rose covered ruins and sea views, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Also famous for the location of the film Pippa Longstockings.

Once a powerful Hanseatic city, Visby flourished during the 12-13th centuries as a major trading hub in the Baltic region. Today, more than 200 historical buildings remain, including the church ruins of St Nicolai, St Karin with its soaring arches, the 12th century Sankta Maria Cathedral, still in use, we couldn’t go into the main church as there was a concert taking place.

Visby’s inner town is surrounded by a 3.4k city wall, complete with original towers from the 13th century. It was originally built to protect against both foreign enemies and Swedish assailants from the countryside. Also, nowhere else in Sweden has there been so many Viking or medieval treasures discovered.
