Palma, Majorca – 2

Our second visit to Palma, we decided to visit the Cathedral – Basilica de Santa Maria de Mallorca. The Cathedral was built on the site of an old Mosque, the building was designed and built in the Gothic style and commenced in the early 1200s. Over the years many additions and changes in style took place, including the addition of baroque features. In 1851 it was affected by a earthquake and extensive restoration was instigated. Between 1904 and 1915 Antonio Gaudi was commissed to alter the internal space, to make it more open including the opening up up the choir chancel, Bishops Throne and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity and the exposure of the stained glass windows.

Lots of small chapels dedicated to various saints including Saint Sebastian (I went to St Sebastian Primary School), together with a small annexe, housing a tomb, artwork and housing a pair of stunning candlesticks, which took 14 years to create out of solid silver!

Visited the small Sacred Arts Museum nearby, again excellent display of religious artifacts dating from the 14th century.

Obviously we then needed a couple of beers and a snack, in a lovely square, watching the world go by. Headed back to the ship after a browse around the market stalls.
