Azerbaijan to Telavi, Georgia

15 May 2026

Left Azerbaijan, with a quick coffee stop on the way. We had to pass through 2 passport checks, 400m walk to the exit point of Azerbaijan then a 350m walk to passport control in Georgia. Surprisingly, Azerbaijan citizens are not allowed to cross borders unless on an aircraft !

Stopped at the medieval village of
Sighnaghi, with its fortress walls and fabulous views of the Alazani Valley. This area is in the Kakheti wine growing region of Georgia, who are alleged to be the oldest growing wine region in the world.

Checked into our hotel in Telavi for the night, headed off to a local winery. Akido, for our evening meal, music and wine tasting. Georgi was a fabulous host along with his wife Eka. Fabulous local food, along with amber and red wines from the winery. Georgi explained the traditional method of wine making, using underground amphores and home bottling, of course we had to buy a bottle to take with us.

Our entertainment was a group of 3 local boys who performed the traditional polyphonic singing, In the traditional and new styles. Really interesting.
