Kirby Hall, Framlingham Castle & Audley End House

18 Sep 2021

Have been to a number of English Heritage sites in the last few days on our circuitous way back home from a wedding Garthmyl Hall near Shrewsbury and visiting our friend Di in Clacton on Sea, don’t ask Clacton is definitely not on the way home but Nigel likes driving!
Kirby Hall near Corby, a near ruin of an Elizabethan house, which once belonged to Lord Chancellor Christopher Hatton from 1575.
Framlingham Castle and local St Michael’s Church. The Castle was built in the 12th century and its inhabitants were either in or out of favour over the next several hundred years. It was finally bequeathed to Pembroke College and a poor house built within the walls which was part of the bequest.
Audley End House and Gardens near Saffron Walden. Magnificent house, unfortunately no photos internally, well worth a visit as long as you don’t mind stuffed animals of which there is a huge collection. Parterre Garden was well laid out and good backdrop to the house. Owned by generations of Lord Braybrooke’s and visited by James I, impressive original ceilings and libraries.
