Northen Cyprus

26 Sep 2021

First part of our holiday visiting friends Ang & Garry in Azdeniz in Northern Cyprus (TRNC), our second attempt as we had planned to visit last year, but Covid put paid to those plans!
Bit of a paperwork faff and one or two PCR tests (although this has now changed and not as many needed) to get here but definitely worth it for catching up with our friends and the sights to see.
TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) is well worth visiting. The people are friendly and there is a lot to see and all the places we visited only cost £1.25 entrance fee or were free. There is a lot of history and ancient sights, due to the islands strategic place in the Med. Has been ruled by Ottomans, Romans, Turks and probably a few other nations.
There are ongoing issues about the island between TRNC (which is not a recognised country) and Cyprus since 1974. Varosha is a ghost town in the South of Famagusta which has been left to rot since 1974 and the UN last year opened the area for visitors. It is sad to see such a large area in this way and looking like there will be no agreement between the countries to enable it to be reopened in the future.
We flew into Larnaca and got an arranged local TRNC taxi firm to our friends, who helped ensure we had the correct paperwork. Extremely smooth border crossing. To return to Larnaca our friends dropped us off at the Ledra Street crossing in Nicosia, again very easy passing through both the Turkish and Greek borders, a 10 min walk to get the bus to Larnaca, 4 Euro each and our hotel was only 5 mins from the Central Bus Stop.
Spending our last couple of days in Larnaca, visiting all those places Nigel has talked about over the years when he was in the Air Force, more than 35 years ago!! Might not like the changes or even recognise some places!!
