In a world full of coincidences, Barbara who we also met on the Queen Mary 2 in Jan 20, arrived into Perth on the same day as we did! We met up for Brunch at the Boat Shed in South Perth and then took a cruise down the Swan River to Fremantle, where we had fish and chips at Cicerellos.
The next day we waved goodbye to Barbara as she boarded the Indian Pacific train to Sydney. After which we had coffee by the water (which had jellyfish in) not far from the Optus Stadium.
Back to Fremantle the next day and a visit to the prison, which only closed in 1996. The conditions were horrendous and they were still using toilet buckets until then. Looked around the Roundhouse which was also a prison when it was built, before the number of prisoners meant they needed a bigger prison!
Mandurah was our next day out, taking the train down to this coastal town, commonly referred to as the Venice of Western Australia. Took a boat trip around the waterways, to see the fabulous waterfront houses and spotting the bottlenose dolphins. Saw the odd one or two and in the distance a small pod chasing fish near the bank, along with the odd pelican or two.
Not far from where we are staying is the Number 1 Pumphouse and Dam, which we took a walk across, where there were divers in the reservoir removing rubbish thrown in carelessly.
