Brittany – West Tour

10 May 2025

Our last tour of this holiday before we head back home.

Quimper
We parked on one of the many car parks along the riverbank, it’s a lovely city famous for its tin-plated pottery – Faïence (produced for over 3 centuries), in a valley where the rivers Odet and Steir meet. The city gets its name from the Bretton for confluence, Kemper. The city has streets of half-timber houses and the immense Cathédrale de St Corentin, with its twin spires, the largest cathedral in Brittany. Lots of nice boutique type shops, with the odd donkey or two!

Point de Pen-Hir
Fabulous views from the Crozon Peninsula, over flat heathland and jagged cliffs that plunge into the Iroise Sea 70m below. The Armorican sandstone cliffs are exposed to sea spray and are the ideal place for climbing enthusiasts, of which there were loads. It is also the site of the Monument to the Bretons of Free France, known as the Cross of Pen-Hir and inaugurated by General Charles de Gaulle in 1960.

Caramet-Sur-Mer
Well we did try to go along the sea front here, but the one way system was definitely not going our way. The town is famous for spiny lobster, the Tour Vauban (historic fortification guarding the harbor and built in 1669–94) and the Notre-Dame de Rocamadour, famous for the model boats that are left there as offerings.

Locronan
Our last stop of the day. In the 6th century, Saint Ronan arrived on a pilgrimage to teach Christianity to the people and the town was named after him, “Lok”, meaning hermitage, giving Locronan. The town is also one of “The most beautiful villages of France” and you can see why, it is often used as a film location, for its well preserved granite houses, church and cobbled streets. Cars must park out of town, all shops have traditional signage. Definitely worth a visit, even bought the odd item or two, including a Yahtzee set, beautifully wrapped, secured with wax seals.

Now on our journey home via overnight in Calais, Le Shuttle and stop at Peterborough to see Nigel’s sister.
