Malta North and South

7 Dec 2025

We left our hotel in a taxi, shared with an Italian couple, who were also affected by the flooded rooms. For some reason our taxi driver was trying to take us to the Courtyard by Marriott in Gozo and not Sliema. Thankfully the Italian couple spotted we were going the wrong way, lots of disgruntled musings from the driver but we eventually arrived at the correct hotel. However, although they said our room would be ready, it wasn’t, after some discussion they found us a room, which was nice as it was an upgraded to one with a very small balcony and evdn smaller Seaview. Not complaining as they left us a bottle of wine and local biscuits whilst we were out.

Also not complaining as the sun was out and set to be like this for the rest of the week.

Headed off eventually around the coast to St Paul’s Bay, then on to Mellieħa and the main church Our Lady of Victory for a quick walk round, before heading to the painted steps and on to Selmun Tower, which is completely unsafe and closed to visitors.

Our next stop was the Red Tower on the Marfa Peninsular, fabulous views of nearby Comino Island. We then headed to the Egg Church at Mgarr, so named as it was built in the shape of an egg to encourage locals to sell eggs to fund its construction.

Malta South
First stop was the small fishing village of Marsascala, lovely walk around the harbour with a coffee stop.

Quick photo stop at St Thomas’s Tower before setting off for the Sunday Market at Marsaxlokk, luckily found a good parking spot, I think because we were a little late, the fish market was nearly finished, but plenty of other stalls to look around and a leisurely stop for a beer.

Headed back to Sliema on the very narrow roads before we hit Route 1 the main road on the Island. Although they drive on the left, rules don’t seem to apply, one way streets are the norm, roundabouts are just how brave you are, people walk in front of the car, it’s madness and so glad we have a small car and Nigel’s driving and not me!
