Dartford & National Trust weekend

19 Apr 2026

Had a lovely weekend with our friends Angela & Chris, started with a visit to Chartwell. This was the home of Winston Churchill, really interesting and loads of information on his family life and of course politics.

Next Emmetts Garden and their fabulous bluebells, which we saw at their best, along with lots of cherry blossom, which people travel to Japan to see.

Next day off to Ightham Mote, built around the mid 1300s, despite much research, it has still not been established exactly when it was built. Started off as one oblong building with a moat, which is fed from nearby so rings and culverts, discharging on a different side, so the moat water is kept pretty fresh. Added to over the time to form a quadrangle with inner courtyard, which contains the only Grade 1 listed dog kennel!! Was mainly inhabited by gentry over the years, finally an American for the last 20 before being handed over to the National Trust.
