Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) & Basildon Park

30 Jul 2021

Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) our first visit yesterday. Unfortunately couldn’t take photos inside as the family do use the house as a home during the year. Lots of photos in some of the rooms showing scenes from the show. Gorgeous house and lovely to see having watched Downton and just in the middle of the rerun on ITV3. Brilliant Egytian exhibition in the basement as the 5th Lord Carnarvon worked and supported Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamen’s Tomb in 1922/23.
Second visit to Basildon Park where the first floor was open to the public. The last owners had spent 50 years renovating the house to what it is now and then handed it to the National Trust in their later years as they had no children.
